Auction #182 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1499 in auction 182
Item Description
Pair consists of very large mc 2" porcelain enamels set into brass frames
w/2.5" dia. Reverse brass shank and threaded screw make for a length of 2.75".
These English-made items were produced for the American market in the early 19th
century, generally known as Battersea enamels. Similar examples are shown as
Hake Washington 3001 and 3003 but typically these are offered as single units,
not a matched pair, and unusually only in three colors while these are mc
w/delicate shading on the facial areas. Most importantly, the typical size is
1.5" dia. while these are impressively and significantly larger at 2.5". One
tie-back has .25" tarnish spot on rim and 3/16x.25" surface flake off the right
middle bkg. removing just a sliver of pale blue paint but well away from the
image. The other tie-back is flawless. Extremely rare and highly desirable,
almost never seen in this large size as a pair. Exc.
