Item Description
In 1938 Madame Alexander produced 16 different Disney character marionettes including the 3 in this lot along with Donald and Snow White characters. The 3 marionettes in this lot are 8” to 9” tall/long. Each is complete with wood/metal wire controller unit. Mickey and Minnie have painted composition heads, hands and feet with fabric outfits over wood body and elastic legs. Pluto’s body is all painted composition with fabric collar and elastic tail. Moderate scattered wear to composition including paint rubs/flakes but nothing too serious. Fabric outfits have noticeable aging. Each marionette remains Fine overall. The large cardboard stage consists of 2 pieces, the front stage section with simulated curtains as well as the plain red cardboard backdrop frame. Stage front is 38x48”. Bottom center features sign “Walt Disney’s Silly Symphony Marionette Theater” with images of Mickey and Pluto on either side. At top center curtain area is additional Mickey portrait. On sides are illustrations of Minnie, Donald Duck, Snow White, Doc, Dopey and Fifer Pig. Entire bottom 5” margin has moisture stain. Additional moderate scattered wear and aging due to its large size. Overall VG and still a very impressive display piece. This stage is very rare while the marionettes themselves are rare on their own. We have only offered a few over the years, our last was a Pluto many years ago which sold for over $400. From the Tomart Archives (and featured in an issue of Tomart’s Disneyana update) and comes with COA signed by Tom Tumbusch & Ted Hake.
