Auction #199 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 972 in auction 199
Item Description
Large oval celluloid is 3.75x5-1/8”. Reverse has twisted wire easel so item will stand. Reverse metal back has 95% complete large label from “St. Louis Button Co.” Metal back at left has 1x1.5” oxidation mark but causes no problem. Cello front has typical but very tiny and minor marks which show in reflected light but no real damage. Upper left has 1.25” vertical black line which is as made in the photo. Wonderful image of fantastic building disguised as a massive mountain of snow and ice. At lower center treacherous and huge icicles hang over cavernous opening with small actual entryway showing as tiny rounded arch just 3/16” across. Hundreds of people in suits and long dresses are in the foreground ‘On The Pike’ as the amusement area was called. At the center left on the ice mountain is tiny image of a man on a sled with a team of 4 dogs. The scale of this structure was truly grand. Only the snow and ice were artificial as the Eskimo residents lived in sealskin or reindeer tents, tended sled dogs, paddled canoes across man-made lake and held native sports demonstrations and marriage ceremonies. Two popular features were the seal hunt and gold mining demonstrations. See following lot picturing 2 Eskimos which participated in this exhibit. Plus second lot picturing Indian woman from a different Expo exhibit. Extremely Fine overall and displaying essentially Mint as made. The only example known to us.
