Item Description
Lot of 3. First 2 cards are identical. 2.25x4”. “United States Capitol/Admit Bearer/This Date Only/NOV. 24 1963 NOV. 25 1963 (ink-stamped dates) Issued By: The Capitol Police Board.” The state funeral of JFK took place during the 3 days that followed his assassination on Fri., Nov. 22, 1963 in Dallas, TX. On Nov. 24, the Sunday after the assassination, JFK’s coffin was carried on a horse-drawn caisson to the U.S. Capitol to lie in state. Throughout the day and night, hundreds of thousands lined up to view the guarded casket. Representatives from over 90 countries attended the state funeral on Mon., Nov. 25. Third item is 2.25x3.5”. Printed press card with clear plastic sleeve and pin back for wearing. Reads “Press/John F. Kennedy Center For The Performing Arts/Ground Breaking/December 2, 1964.” Trace of edge wear on open ends of plastic sleeve. These items were originally issued to Charles D’Onofrio who began his 40-plus year career as a CBS-TV cameraman in the 1950s. Twice he was awarded an Emmy for his work. Each funeral card has a last name other than D’Onofrio penciled on the otherwise blank reverse. We believe the names were those of additional CBS-TV crew members. All three items are very limited in distribution and the only examples known to us. Fine. See these additional political items from D'Onofrio #108, 113, 114, 146 and 408.
