Item numbers 1187 through 2776 in auction 200
Item Description
14x21.5” thin cardboard poster for Baltimore, MD. teen dance television show that aired on WJZ-TV from 1957-1964. Sign catered to “Teenagers” as noted at top of sign and advertised “Buddy Deane Record Hops Every Friday Every Saturday 8:30 PM-11:30 PM Pier Ballroom Ocean City, MD.” The Buddy Deane Show featured teenagers “Dancing To The Nation’s Top Hits – Fun, Contests, Prizes, Excitement.” The Buddy Deane Show was taken off the air in 1964 because WJZ could not integrate black and white dancers like their competitor American Bandstand did. In competition with each other, it was said that acts appearing on the Buddy Deane Show first were later barred from American Bandstand but that was not the case with acts appearing on American Bandstand first, later being welcomed by Dean's show. In fact, WJZ blocked the broadcast of American Bandstand in Baltimore and broadcast the Deane Show instead, it is said because American Bandstand showed black teenagers dancing on the show. However, the Deane Show set aside every other Friday to feature only black teenagers dancing. This Baltimore controversy later gave rise to John Waters’ 1988 film Hairspray, its Broadway run and subsequent 2007 remake. Poster has 1x2” chips off upper corners and 1” tear at lower bottom. VG+.
