Item Description
29.5x37.5” one-sheet circus poster by Strobridge Litho Co. c. 1895. Poster features 3 distinct scenes, center scene showing 4 performing donkeys “The Wrestling, Leaping, Trick And Clown Donkey, As He Actually Appears When Creating Shouts Of Laughter.” Donkey is shown jumping over trio of horses, head-butting, dancing and throwing Ringmaster. Scene at left shows “Queer Antics Of The Famous Equestrian Baboon While On The High Wire, Jumping Banners, Feats Of Equestrianism And In Other Curious Acts.” Baboon is shown on tightrope and jumping from horse’s back over banner as man and clown hold banner. Scene at right shows “An Entire Company Of Remarkable Leaping, Summersault And Novel Trick Dogs, Who Do Every Conceivable Kind Of Act, Feat And Difficult Performance.” Two dogs are shown on their back legs dressed in costumes, one a clown. Another dog is shown walking on his front legs only and others are shown jumping over high stick. “Fun For The Little Ones. Quaint Quibbles And Funny Frolics In The Carnival Of Merriment For Children, By Monkey, Mule, Man, Dog And All Other Kinds Of Comical Clowns.” Poster touts “Positively The 31st Annual Tour Of This Great Show.” The Adam Forepaugh Circus was in existence from 1864-1895 after which it was combined with Sells Bros. Vertical crease at center has tape reinforcement on reverse. Poster shows lt. margin wear but if framed would display Exc. This is absolutely the finest circus poster we have ever offered.
