Item Description
This most unusual 1.25” button is c. 1900 and displays a photo of an illustration depicting two young girls, one white and one black with hair in pigtails, each wearing a dress tied at the back top but hanging open at the bottom to display their rear ends. The text beneath the illustration is “Montana But-ton House.” The white girl is holding a sign they are both looking at and this reads “The Montana Button House/Hawes Mgr./No 12 W. Mercury/Butte Mont.” Button has narrow .25” line of stain on rim edge at 5 o’clock. Reverse is quite unusual in that it has an exceptionally wide collet with a fixed horizontal bar pin. Tiny 1/8” spot where a speck of celluloid did not fold under the collet but causes no structural problems. In addition to promoting a very early and obscure button company, button is also likely among the very first to picture an African-American female. VF.
