Item Description
This rare 1934 Whitman is #725 and measures 4-3/8x5.5". Both front and back hardcovers are totally loose and display the art from the hardcover second printing. However, the spine, still attached, is softcover and displays the art from the first printing being a partial image of a running young girl in rw dress. This is not the case of someone simply taping hardcovers to a coverless softcover book because along the left edge of the front hardcover is a 1/8" wide strip w/softcover art visible along the edge of the cardboard sheet that holds the paper w/second printing art. Covers are quite clean and bright but w/small paper chips missing where they came loose, small cellophane tape residue along front left edge. Back cover has scattered dots of color loss, 1.5" tape mark, vertical crease line making cover slightly flexible near the center. Inside covers have a couple streaks of old tape stain. Title page has a 1.5" tape stain at left, final three sheets in the book are loose from the other pages, final page w/image has small corner gone and 2.5" tape stain from tape used and still there on the final two blank sheets. Book is complete w/probable exception of a blank unnumbered page preceding title page. Final two picture pages have small bit of neat crayon color on the illustrations. The paper of the softcover spine is lightly tanned w/very minor traces of tape residue. While overall condition is Fair to Good, an interesting book combining elements of both the soft and hardcover printings, both rare and this variation is even rarer, possibly a sole surviving example.
