Item Description
5” dia. by 2.5” deep by 6.5” tall overall. c. 1956. Standard wind-up alarm clock with 3.5” customized face for use as a promotional item to get advertising for The Tonight Show. Face has repeated show start time “11:15 PM” and text “The Steve Allen Show/More Bang For The Advertising Buck.” Bottom of face has “3” and shadowy mirror image of the same number likely representing the TV station channel number. Image of Allen shows him sporting large black rim glasses with fake mustache and a question mark on his forehead as he portrays his character “The Question Man.” Later Johnny Carson re-worked this character and presented him as “Carnac.” Brass-finished, made in Germany alarm clock shows aging/wear to finish. Back has dent at 2 o’clock. Fine. Clock face is N. Mint. First we’ve seen.
