Item Description
1.25” with W&H text on reverse but larger text “Compliments Of The Road Maker.” Front of button reads in full “Delegate To International Good Roads Congress And L.A.W. Festival Port Huron, Mich. July 2-3-4-5, 1900.” This event grew out of the efforts of Horatio Earle, a Detroit businessman specializing in road-related activities. He became a member of L.A.W. in 1896 and in 1899 announced contest to increase membership and promote good roads. The first Michigan city to recruit 200 L.A.W. members would host an international Good Roads Congress for which this button was issued. Earle asked Michigan Governor Pingree to appoint 1,000 delegates to the Congress but the Governor declined on the basis that he felt the majority of Michigan people did not favor good roads. At the event, Earle tried to establish the idea that with wise investment of money and modern techniques, roads could be built at a reasonable price and on July 4th Earle hitched together the first Good-Roads train ever assembled. It consisted of a traction engine, road roller, sprinkler, dump wagons and farm wagons which were loaded with several hundred people to ride in a parade on a macadam road financed and using equipment from Port Huron Engine And Thresher Co. Button is Exc. and displays Mint. Historic and only example we’ve seen.
