Item Description
Lot of 5, approximately 8.5x11”. 4 are mid-1950s, one 1960s. The popularity of the Playboy and Esquire men’s magazines of the mid-1950s resulted in these parody publications from various sources. First is Jan. 1958 “Jackpot/The Cads Home Companion” with article titled “Playboy vs. Plowboy.” This article sets the tone for the reasoning of publishing Playboy/Esquire parodies. The article comments on Playboy by “Saying That It Appears To Be Kind Of A Lower Case Or Downtown Esquire.” This “Jackpot” magazine seems to have similar articles/photos to the Playboy style. Handling wear. VG. Next is “Plowboy” issue #1-Spring, 1957. This magazine was published by same publisher as “Jackpot.” Parody includes “Playboy-like” articles, cartoons, images. Centerfold is a nicely done illustration of a bare-breasted lady with text “Den Mother/Plowboys Plowmate Of The Month.” Articles include ones authored by Max (not Ernest) Hemingway/Max (not William) Faulkner/Max (not Guy) DeMaupassant. Light handling wear/aging. Overall Fine. Next is “Harvard Lampoon Parody Of Playboy.” Vol. #1, No. 1, 1966. High quality printing with advertising for legitimate products. Interesting that ads feature Bill Cosby and Woody Allen. Parody barbs many typical Playboy-style articles, cartoons, images. Centerfold has bare-breasted Playmate with tan lines where they shouldn’t be. She appears tanned (not un-tanned) across her breasts and bottom, opposite of how she would appear from having a natural tan due to a two-piece bathing suit. A lengthy article titled “Playboy Pad, Mobile Mansion” is a pictorial of trailers being pulled by Rolls Royces. A well-done, 3-page cartoon titled “Little Orphan Bosom” and parodies the popular Playboy feature “Little Annie Fannie.” Interesting to note cover photo of young lady in jester’s outfit making bunny ears behind her jester stick. Light handling wear. Interesting reading. Fine. Next is “Esquire/A Pointer Parody.” Done by “The Pointer Publications” dated Jan. 17, 1958. Magazine is “Official Publication Of The Corps Of Cadets, U.S. Military Academy.” “The Pointer” is in reference to the West Point Military Academy In New York. Many articles/cartoons/images with a military cadet theme or connection. This publication lacks any revealing images. The Esquire “Esky” character is parodied throughout the magazine. Noticeable wear/handling creases. .5x1” piece of cover missing. VG. Last is “Esqueer/A Penn State Froth Parody.” Dated March 1951, this college parody is filled with many legitimate ads for various products of interest to college students. An “Esky” character appears throughout the magazine. Magazine lacks any revealing images or illustrations, however several are suggestive. Interesting articles relating to campus life during the 1950s. Cover corner tip missing. Considerable handling wear. Overall VG. This is an interesting lot filled with many articles, cartoons and images typical of the 1950s lifestyle.
