Item Description
Lot of two items. First is 3-5/8x5" booklet w/16 pages. Cover text includes "Compliments Of Chase & Sanborn." Book tells story in verse of Brownies and their adventures including trip to "The Island Of Java." Center pages are diecut in upper center to show illustration of coffee can on inside back cover. Every other page has tinted illustrations of Brownies w/green/brown accents. By end of story Brownies have roasted the coffee beans and sit around tree stump on toadstools enjoying their freshly brewed coffee. Cute story w/great illustrations. Unmarked as Palmer Cox but story revolves around Brownies as indicated in text of story. Back cover has photo of lady holding up a can of "Seal Brand Coffee/Chase & Sanborn." Caption below reads "Finest Grown." Bottom text reads in red "Compliments Of Frank Sternberg, Elsworth, Kans." c. 1890s. Lt. surface dust to cover o/w Exc. Lot also includes 1.5x6.5" diecut two-piece paperdoll w/Brownie figure titled "Uncle Sam" at bottom. Back of head reads "Palmer Cox's Brownie Dolls Free. A Brownie Doll In Every Package Of Lion Coffee." Back of body has text w/instructions to obtain more dolls. Bottom tabs on right and left of doll intended to enable doll to stand up are missing. Crease across chest o/w Fine.
