Item Description
7/8” with W&H backpaper used only in 1901. Curl text reads “Copyrighted By Hurdle & Tandy.” Also on bottom right curl is what seems to be an artist’s mark consisting of a capital letter “D” or “P” above a capital letter “W” which is followed by a lower case letter “o.” Pictured is bizarre creature foreshadowing Dr. Seuss with bird-like head featuring a large curved beak joining a giraffe-like neck accented by a suspended bell. The body is more or less camel shaped although the hump area is a series of jagged peaks. The creature’s front foot is like that of a bird while the rear foot is more designed as a hoof. The animal’s long skinny tail ends in an oval shape. We have no clue as to the origin of this critter but this is indeed the only example of the button we’ve seen. Essentially Mint. Comes with Hake’s COA.
