Item Description
Badge is 2.5x10.25” tall including the elaborate metallic brass tassels. Mint luster on the embossed brass hanger featuring a star. Gold lettering reads “Bortners’/Reunion/August 7, 1897/Pennsylvania Delegation.” At center is attached by metal prongs 1.75” celluloid picturing American flag. This has all-over tiny tan age spotting. Rest of the ribbon is extremely clean although when held to light there are a couple of narrow vertical splits in the bottom blue panel of the fabric. One of these is about .5” while another to the side and below the letter “D” of “Delegation” is overall about 1.5”. Under normal circumstances these hairlines do not show at all. The most interesting part of this piece is its reverse where 3 tiny tin tabs from the obverse celluloid hold in place a 15/16” colored paper label picturing the Yellow Kid. Text surrounding his image reads “Lewis Minks, Jr./Baltimore MD/Badges/Buttons/109-111 N. Charles St.” Lettering on his shirt is “Dis Is De Only Man What Kin Please De Hogans Alley Kids.” There is a little faint pencil writing above the paper label but we can’t decipher it. Label itself is essentially Mint. Only example we’ve seen.
