Item Description
3.75x7-1/8” woven silk listed but not shown in Sullivan/Fischer ribbon book as WS-3. This is one of only 7 designs they catalogue for Scott. They describe scenes and text as: Center a small oval military bust of Scott flanked by implements and symbols of war and peace; above: a scroll inscribed “The Hero Of Many Battles/Churubusco”; below: “Lundy’s Lane/Chippewa/’Let Us Die Arms In Hand, Our Country Demands The Sacrifice’,” an illustration of a battle scene and “Vera Cruz/Cerro Gordo/Mexico” (Warner #57). The left and right sides have vertical panels where the weave leaves a mesh-like stripe. These stripes are accented by gold thread forming a 3/16” wide line that curves back and forth from top to bottom. This mesh area on left is intact. On right there is an area near top about .5” square with missing threads. Also, at the bottom of the right side there are broken and missing threads on an area about .5” wide by 1.5” tall. The fabric can be positioned so little actual loss of fabric shows. In addition, another incredible feature of the weaving, showing only in reflected light, are the presence on the bkg. fabric of small (.25” dia.) designs comprised of 4 petal-like shapes. We count 14 of these from top to bottom. The technology used to produce this dramatic and visually stunning design was a marvel of the 1852 era. The ribbon is fragile by nature and its survival with just a small degree of damage over the past 158 years is rather miraculous. An important campaign rarity.
