Item Description
Large and of unusual construction reading “State Of New York/April, 1865.” Ribbon size is 3.25x9.25” plus a sewn-on 3.5” dia. rosette in 5 thick layers of black crepe bring total height to 11”. There is no reverse pin so the wearer was required to provide his own fastener. The black printing and center vignette are on silver fabric, however, this fabric is encased front and back in black mesh-like crepe with a hand-sewn vertical seam on the reverse. It is quite likely this ribbon was used at some New York state location during the nation’s first national funeral over 13 days as the funeral train journeyed 1,700 miles from Washington to Springfield, Illinois with 11 planned memorial services in the principle cities of Baltimore, Harrisburg, Philadelphia, New York City, Albany, Buffalo, Cleveland, Columbus, Indianapolis, Chicago and Springfield. Rare, historic and N. Mint.
