Item Description
12x18.5” thin paper printed on one side also reading “Vol. I New York, November 6, 1867. No. 1.” Features ten captioned cartoon images. Includes image of black man with text “This Is What Killed The Republican Party.” Another shows four black dandies with text “Douglass, I Guess You Won’t Go To Congress.” We found election results from November 10, 1867 New York Times. Two cartoons relate to Sheriff race. One of these shows Tammany candidate “O’Brien T. Throwing A Bee (Republican) Up The River.” Another cartoon shows “The Defeated Candidates!” named as Fithian, Abbe/Gates/McKean. Fithian was Republican candidate for Supreme Court and lost to Democrat Cardero. Sheet has faint folds. Center has couple dots or tiny 1/8” paper slivers gone. Upper left quadrant has 8” tear now neatly repaired on reverse with archival tape and barely visible. Displays Fine. A great early piece for the cartoon and/or the New York City collector. Rare. Also see #18.
