Item Description
This extremely rare ribbon badge has some fabric damage but it remains quite attractive and likely there is no other example surviving. From the top heavy brass bar pin to the brass fringe, the item is 10” tall. The frame with cardboard name insert is a large 3” across. Inked name is “Mrs. Alton E. Etling/Orville Ohio.” The suspended red, white and blue ribbon reads “Gem City/Democratic/Club/Dayton, Ohio.” This holds a large mint brass luster die-cut Democratic rooster. The weight of the rooster and the metal points at his feet has caused some limited vertical shredding of the thin ribbon fabric. The left margin has very shallow line with wear and missing threads along a 2” length, but not very deep. There is a vertical .75” split between the letters “PR” of “PRESIDENT.” There is a larger and wider 1.75” long vertical split through the “O” of “FOR” and touching the “I” of “PRESIDENT” but most of this is covered and hidden when the rooster is in its correct position. There are 3 other much more minor .25” to .5” splits around and above the right side of the words “For President.” The last split is at upper right, about 1” long and 1/8” wide but nearly totally covered by the blue ribbon holding the rooster. Most gold lettering remains intact and the full text is easily readable as “For/President/James M. Cox/Governor/Of/Ohio/Democracy/ Will Win With/’Cox’/San Francisco/1920.” A great rarity from the nominating convention worthy of the most advanced collection.
