Item Description
Undated 11.25x17.25” newspaper of 12 pages issued in advance of protests. Front cover reads “May Day/New Haven/An Information Newspaper Published By/View From The Bottom-Yale Strike News/Committee To Defend The Panthers.” Red lettering printed across the top of the black and white image of the Courthouse reads “FREE THE PANTHERS.” Contains numerous photos of Panther leaders, centerfold map of New Haven with first aid stations and telephones marked in red plus cartoon panther, dog and alligator at left and pig at map’s center; plus “scheduled” events with list of “rock bands” (Brownsville Station and six others), “Jazz Bands” (Eddie Gale plus 7 others) and “Main Railly” speakers of “Abby Hoffman, David Dellinger, Carol Brightman of the Venceremes Brigade and Bigman of Black Panther Party.” There is also a 10 point “pocket lawyer” list to use in case of arrest. Articles include “Prison Where Is Thy Victory” by “Huey P. Newton/Minister of Defense/Black Panther Party.” Very minor 1” split on front cover at left end of centerfold. Trace of tanning. N. Mint for newsprint of this age. Rare and only one we’ve seen.
