Item Description
7x8.75” vintage glossy bw newspaper photo shows members of the Armed Services who have received the Purple Heart returning from the fighting front and receiving candy and comic books from female “American Red Cross Service” volunteer. Mimeographed typed text sheet attached to reverse is dated Feb. 19, 1945 and details “The Boys’” return to New York Port and details the specialized care they received upon their return. Text also highlights the work done by American Red Cross volunteers as seen in photo. Of special note, volunteer is seen handing out different comic books which include “Action Comics” #80 which featured the second appearance (and first cover appearance) of Superman’s mischievous foe Mr. Mxyztplk who is clearly visible on the cover. Other partially visible comic books include “Batman” #26 and “All American Comics” #63. Photo has some handling wear and aging but displays Exc. Great photo for comic book collectors and historians. From the Morry Greener Collection.
