Item Description
The first Byrd Antarctic expedition took place 1928-1930 consisting of 2 ships and 3 airplanes.  On Nov. 29, 1929 the famous flight over the South Pole was made by Byrd, pilot Bernt Balchen and co-pilot/radio man Harold June.  They returned to America June 18, 1930 and this button was issued around that time for a homecoming celebration.  Button features real photos of "R.E. Byrd" and "H.I. June" with surrounding text "Byrd's Antarctic Expedition/Bristol, R.I."  No backpaper likely as issued.  Noticeable stain primarily on the rim but some scattered spots around the photo area as well.  Hake Book Collectible Pin-Back Buttons photo example Explorers Section #18.  Comes with Hake's COA.  While just VG condition, we've seen only 2 or 3 of these over the decades.  Also see early North Pole-related button for St. Louis Expo #806 and following related South Pole button.
