Item Description
The song “Just Because She Made Dem Goo-Goo Eyes” was published in 1900 with words by John Queen and music by Hughey Cannon. The song was an instant hit and seems to have inspired this pin. Other famous compositions by Cannon are “Won’t You Come Home Bill Bailey” from 1902 and “Frankie And Johnny” from 1904. Edison recorded John Queen, in blackface, performing the song 12/29/1901. The item is 1.5” in dia. with a thin tin rim surrounding a cardboard designed as a close-up eye with upper and lower lashes accenting an open area with recessed blue and black pupil. The back of the piece is tin with a soldered-on second piece of tin which includes a brass spring and a small tab at the top to which a black string is fastened. Pulling the string activates the front of the piece so it looks as if the eyelid is opening and closing. In the closed position, the word “Goo-Goo” shows. This has some tan coloration on its left side and the rest of the front has just a little general aging but all overall in Fine condition. Back of the piece has a 1.25” vertical stickpin that was once soldered fast. This has partially come loose allowing the pin to move but it remains firmly attached. A clever and rare mechanical badge. Only example we’ve seen.
