Item Description
Nine individual pieces comprise this lot. This club was introduced in 1942 and lasted through 1948. Throughout those years minor to notable changes appeared on all items so numerous varieties of each piece exist. Even in the first year of the club, changes were made to some items. All of this is thoroughly detailed in The Official Price Guide To Pop Culture Memorabilia by Ted Hake. All items in this lot are as issued and to same recipient whose name appears on the mailing label and has been written (as intended) on certificate and decoder. 6x9” envelope is first version. Moderate scattered handling wear and age spotting. VG. Certificate is 8.5x11”. Second version with first paragraph of text altered from the earlier 1942 certificate with ending line reading “To Help Defeat Axis Propaganda Which Seeks To Cause Us To Fight Among Ourselves Instead Of Successfully Fighting Our Enemies.” Includes 13 different DC superhero portraits including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, etc. as well as facsimile signature of “Diana Prince” club secretary. Fold line as issued, trace of margin wear. VF. Next is 4” dia. cardboard decoder. First of 2 versions. Tanned with age but clean. VF. This kit comes with 2-1/8x2.5” embroidered fabric patch rather than metal badge. This replaced the badge because of metal shortage during war years. First version patch. Trace of aging. VF. Club letter is version mentioning the patch. Lt. aging to bottom margin. VF. “Youth And The War Effort” pamphlet reprints M.C. Gaines 1942 CBS radio broadcast which was a defense of comic books and call to involve children in the war room. First version. Lt. aging, Fine. Promotional “The Minute Man Answers The Call” comic folder is ©1943 version. Also by M.C. Gaines. Lt. aging with centerfold. VF. Defense stamp album. Unused but with lt. cover aging. VF. Final item is 3.5x6” paper conservation pamphlet issued to help with the war effort. First we’ve seen this pamphlet as part of the Justice kit. Lt. wear, VF. An exceptional club kit and a must-have for both collectors of premiums as well as Golden Age comic books.
