Item Description
This 1940s piece is most unusual and the first example we’ve seen. It is a thin paper 1-3/8x2.25” label designed to go on a box of wooden matches. The character at the center is obviously inspired by Captain Marvel right down to his lightning bolt accent on the chest and other features of his outfit. Title above his image is “Flyingman Safety Matches” while below the text is “Manufactured By The Sincere Match Factory/Port Swettenham.” To the left and right are what appear to be Chinese characters. The image area is marked with six small medallion-like portraits implying medals awarded at various expositions but not stating that implication. Reverse is blank and does not appear to have gum adhesive layer. Essentially Mint and only example we’ve seen. From the Morry Greener Collection.
