Item Description
Album cover contains 33-1/3 rpm on the “Vee-Jay Records” label. VJLP 1085 Mono. From 1964, this is the second issue cover known to collectors as the “Portrait Sleeve.” This striking portrait of the band was previously used on the "Love Me Do" single release which was derived from a Dezo Hoffman photograph. In 1964 Vee-Jay signed a settlement agreement with Capitol that it would not distribute any more Beatles items after Oct. 15, 1964. In the summer of that year, Vee-Jay, not having any new material to offer fans, decided to re-package the existing songs on different albums in different sleeves. This particular album sold poorly upon release due to the fact that the same tracks had been released in the same configuration under the title “Jolly What!” only a few months previously. No exact figures as to the number of these albums pressed is known but it is believed that only 1500 mono and 300 stereo copies were made, many having been destroyed due to poor sales. Album cover has hole punch at top left. Moderate scattered color rubs/ring wear. No edge splits. Retains a glossy appearance. VG. Both labels have a minor 1” surface paper hairline at spindle hole but as produced. Record itself remains N. Mint. A rare and desirable Beatles LP.
