Item Description
Superb color, graphic political symbols, and historic campaign slogans combine to make this the pre-eminent campaign poster for many collectors. Over the years, examples have sold in excess of $5,000 on numerous occasions. While this example has a few small professionally restored defects, it also displays N.Mint in 1900 style oak frame with mat and ultraviolet light protection glass with framing that cost over $300. The poster is on linen with image area of 19.5x29" and overall size of 30x41". On the reverse is a 7x10" photocopy of an original flier in letter form dated Columbus Ohio 1900 and with the name of the copyright holder and supplier "Neville Williams." Promotional copy refers the poster title as "The Issue Of 1900", lists the symbols shown representing the principles of Bryan and the Democratic Party and states the lithography is printed in ten colors including silver and gold bronze. From a few feet away, the poster displays as nearly flawless. On very close inspection the following small defects can be seen: Upper left corner tip has .75x.75x1" restoration with tiny craze lines in the restored paint; left edge has 2" hairline tear showing a trifle on the blue field of the flag; lower left has .5" hairline tear barely showing; bottom edge below copyright text has mere sliver .75" long of missing paper; from bottom edge upward there is a 3" hairline tear the crosses the two letters "P"'s of the words "Special Privileges"; bottom left corner has 2" horizontal hairline to upper left of text "The Strobridge Litho. Co. Cin. O." and right margin hairline 1" long barely touching edge of flag. We want to emphasize the condition issues are very subtle and barely detract at all from the incredible impact of the poster's spectacular color and graphic patriotic and political imagery. On a 10 scale, this poster is visually a 9+. Here is a brief summary of the poster's slogans and imagery. In addition to the top text "The Issue-1900/Liberty/Justice/Humanity" the other four slogans are "No Crown Of Thorns/No Cross Of Gold/Equal Rights To All/Special Privileges To None." A multitude of symbols include Liberty Bell, Democratic rooster, farmer's plow with laborer's sledge hammer, the flag with blindfolded female for justice, the flag with Statue of Liberty which is being saluted by soldier, Cuban and Filipino, the Declaration of Independence, coins in silver and gold sized to "16 to 1" ratio and best of all in our opinion the "Trusts" octopus with snake head at the end of each tentacle being attacked by female figure in flowing white gown wielding a hatchet whose large blade reads "Democracy." The specific trusts are "Standard Oil Trust, American Steel Trust, US Biscuit Co., American Tobacco Trust." Bottom center reads "Copyright 1900 by Neville Williams Columbus, Ohio" plus name of famous poster printer at lower right "Strobridge Litho. Co." Overall a gorgeous and rare poster framed to the highest standards with a vintage 1900 presentation.
