Item Description
These are all original press photos from the 1930s of various sizes and with various ink stamps, notations and information sheets on the reverse. Photo no. 2 and 6 have production crop markings or ink outlining on the fronts as used in publication. Here are the size, date and summary of what each photo shows. In order by date. First is 6x8" photo stamped Dec 1, 1933 with press caption dated 11/28/33 and text related to Alabama mill worker Mrs. Victoria Price, before she goes to the witness stand in Decatur, Alabama "at the trial of Heywood Patterson, one of the defendants in the 'Scottsboro Case.' Later she told her story of an attack by the defendants. Pictured with her is Jack Tiller a witness in the case." Second is 4.75x7" photo stamped May 8 1933. Text reads "Scottsboro Principal in New York/Ruby Bates, one of the principals in the Scottsboro case, shown when she conferred with Joseph Brodsky, New York attorney, in New York, May 3rd. She is expected to address labor groups while in the metropolis. One of the Scottsboro defendants has been sentenced to death, the others are awaiting trial." Third is 7x9" photo stamped April 3, 1933. Back text includes "Scottsboro Negros heavily guarded at opening of trial!/A heavy guard of Deputies and Militiamen surrounded them to prevent any outbreaks among the crowd which thronged the courthouse." One guard holds a Tommy gun. Many onlookers are seen in the background. Number four is 7.5x11" photo stamped January 8 1936. Caption is part of glossy front photo. Text dated January 7/Decatur, Ala./Scottsboro defendant council asks case transfer/Claiming that hostile feeling here made a fair hearing impossible, attorneys for the Scottsboro case defendants petitioned that the case be transferred from State to Federal Court. The attorneys are shown above with their petition." Identified are Fraenkel/Chamblee/Watts. Fifth photo is 8x11". Stamped July 6 1937. Caption is part of gloss front photo. Text notes "Scottsboro Case defendants cheerful/the eight Negroes scheduled to be arraigned in Circuit Court here today is the beginning of another episode of the six year old 'Scottsboro Case' were cheerful before the trial. They and Heywood Patterson, who is serving a 75 year sentence, are shown above in jail at Birmingham, Ala." Last is 5.5x8.5" photo stamped July 27 1937. News clipping attached to back reads "Four freed Scottsboro boys arrive at the Penn Station in New York to be greeted by a crowd of sympathizers that had to be held in check by a police cordon along the station platform." An interesting and rare group relating to social/racial justice and now the subject of a Broadway stage production.
