Item numbers 1 through 1553 in auction 202
Item Description
21x29". "Face Of The Enemy/Stop The Trial!/The War!/The Conspiracy/28 E. Jackson 427-7773." Eight political activists who were prominent in the mass demonstrations of protest during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago were under federal indictment for criminal conspiracy. A group of supporters formed a "Committee To Defend The Conspiracy." Through newspaper ads and mailings they raised funds urgently needed for the legal defense of the eight men. This poster was issued as a fund raiser by this group. The eight men, as a sign of their refusal to be intimidated by the label the government would hang upon them, called themselves The Conspiracy. They made an appeal for financial and moral support to Americans who found in this indictment disturbing implications for the future of Constitutional liberty and a democratic political life. Checks could be made out to "Chicago Defense Fund" and mailed to the address at the bottom of the poster. The committee was made up of such notables as Peter Babcox, Noam Chomsky, Judy Collins, Harvey Cox, Nat Hentoff, Sidney Lens, Norman Mailer, Susan Sontag, Benjamin Spock, I.F. Stone and others. .75" margin tear. Lower right corner crease and a few minor marks. Interesting and VF. First we've seen.
