Item Description
8x11". First seven monthly issues from March-September 1970 plus final issue January 1971. Contents of each include essays, editorials, articles, cartoons and other art, all of anti-establishment, anti-advertising, government, Wall Street, energy policies, many more anti stances with great graphics. Final 1971 issue was forced into Canadian printing resulting in newsprint issue rather than better quality paper of early issues. Covers show tanning with stains on #8 but Exc. binding and overall Fine. Nixon sent the IRS and the FBI after its editors and investors, pressured labor unions to refuse to print the magazine, and had the December 1970 issue seized at the printing press in Montreal by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Scanlan's was founded by Sidney Zion and Warren Hinckle, whose Ramparts magazine had folded two years earlier. Zion has been quoted "What we had in mind was a muck raking magazine. We just went against everything we found wrong in business or government." Robert Crumb art is featured on the cover to issue #6 and also two full pages of Mr. Natural in #5.
Other well known artists include: Herge, Ralph Steadman, Barbara Solomon, Koren, David Pascal, Rodrigues, Toper, John Baldwin, Cem, Arthur Rackham, Ernest Shepard (art & photos), and others.  Great counter culture classics.
