Item Description
10" dia. glazed china with great image of many female bathers in ocean is signed Walt McDougall at lower right. Text around bottom "1854-Atlantic City Semi-Centennial Souvenir Plate-1904". Maker mark on underside Etruria-Mellor & Co. Typical overall crazing to glaze, and top portion of image area is missing in several places due to wear. Overall Fine. In 1893 McDougall was the first cartoonist to have a cartoon printed in color in an American newspaper and in 1894 his "The Unfortunate Fate Of A Well-Intended Dog" collaboration with Mark Fenderson became the first color comic strip in an American newspaper. He did Sunday features for the Philadelphia North American including the Wizard of Oz and Peck's Bad Boy. Interesting Atlantic City item, likely not too many issued.
