Item Description
c.1952. 43x43.75" sheet of hand-painted die-cut fiberboard designed like an artist palette for film based on life of French painter Toulouse-Lautrec. Film title text is made up of individual hand-cut and hand-painted wood letters. Film co-stared Zsa Zsa Gobor, Suzanne Flon, and introduced Colette Marchand. Edges have slight wear and purple color is a bit faded around right side and bottom edge. Surface has scattered small dots of dark purple color and top edge has very narrow 5" color rub in center. Overall Fine. Storyline has noted artist Lautrec with legs badly deformed from a childhood fall regularly visiting the Moulin Rouge where he drinks wine and sketches dancers and singers. He falls in love with a woman on the streets and finds it difficult to balance his personal feelings, artistic abilities and his family name and position. The film won an Oscar for Jose Ferrer as Best Actor and an Oscar for Best Art Direction. A superb display piece from a high-end theater.
