Auction #202 - Part II
Item numbers 1554 through 3213 in auction 202
Item Description
Very thick and stiff molded paper mache 9.5" wide by 12" long by 8" tall probably available only to toy retailers as a toy train department display item as this is the only example we know of and if the piece had been available to the general public certainly others would have survived. Likely made by Old King Cole of Canton, Ohio who produced store display items for Disney and other retailers. The company used stickers to identify their creations but frequently these fall off over the years. The outer surface of the tunnel is in extremely high relief basically representing a pine forest below with mountainous snow-capped summits above. On one side, Mickey with a backpack climbs upward aided by a rope attached to a brown rock above. On the opposite side Mickey holds a pole and skis down the slope. Minor darkening of the paint due to age and about 20% of the paint has chipped off but structurally the piece remains very sound with the vast majority of the color remaining. Very unusual and very neat. Overall VG and the only example we know of. From the Michael J. Stern Collection.
