Item Description
1920s made in France. 12.75x18x3.75" deep cardboard box has lid title "Ombro Cinema" which translates to Shadow Movie. Contains beautifully designed and elaborate 11.5x16-7/8x2.25" paper covered wood unit designed like movie theater stage. Left side of stage has graphics of man looking stunned staring at Charlie Chaplin standing on right side of stage, this is the only depiction of Chaplin on this toy. Box is clean, tight and VF. Inside of lid has label with instructions, additional films availabl,e as well as ink stamp of Paris store. All text is in French. Removable wood frame stage with recessed area was designed to place paper rolls attached to wood dowels w/built in cranks that contain images in holders on back. Crank was then turned and images would travel across black lined thin plastic foreground, thus creating illusion of movie movement. One corner of recessed back also contain wind-up music box for music to accompany film movement. Contains two paper rolls. One features racing motorcycles, horses, airplanes. Other has people running in rain, ships, trains, cowboys, Indians and much more. Stage, films and mechanism are in Exc. condition for this early toy. A wonderful optical toy in optimal condition.
