Auction #202 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1553 in auction 202
Item Description
1.25" with horizontal reverse bar pin and paper of maker Lilley (see item #559). Tiny stain mark on the paper. Front has name of Ohio town and reads "Van Wert Eisteddfod/Dec. 28,1904." The Eisteddfod was an early Welsh institution which encouraged singing, arts and crafts. It was a day devoted to competition among singers, readers, translators, penmen, photographers, knitters and woodworkers. This is a very early dated button for such an event. It displays a red dragon with horse-like legs although the feet end in four talons. The dragon has wings on its back, curly tail which ends in a devil's style point, pointed ears, face with fierce teeth and extended tongue. A small row of scales accent the back. Celluloid is essentially Mint. The only example we've seen for this type of event. Morry Greener Collection.
