Auction #202 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1553 in auction 202
Item Description
1.75" wide metal star with rose gold color metallic sheen designed as a five point star with turned up arms making the piece nearly 1" deep. At center a .75" dia. golden luster metal piece displays an eagle with text "Friends Of New York State Soldiers And Sailors." Beneath this piece, but not showing, is a conical metal tube decorated in rwb enamel paint designed as flag-like stars and stripes. These stars and stripes rwb colors reflect on the raised surrounding star arms and in addition the center column is movable so when worn any movement causes a shimmering effect. The reverse hinge has a pair of pointed prongs for fastening. On the back the name "Cartier" and "U.S. Pat 2-220-442" appears. We researched this number and learned the design concept was an invention in the name of Edmond Foret, one of Cartier's principal designers prior to 1950 and before he moved to Buenos Aries to continue his acclaimed career as a jewelry designer. The patent was granted Nov. 5, 1940 for jewelry creation to display gem stones combined with a flower form "Which appears to have life...by making the petals of a flower in the form of a concave mirror and by mounting the flower's center upon a fine spring so that the slightest movement will cause the center to quiver." Here the flower is substituted for a star and flag motif likely intended to be sold to benefit N.Y. state military personnel. The reverse hinge clasp is missing a tiny .25" area of the rose gold color but this is exceedingly minor and all else is essentially Mint. We will send the patent information along with the item. Beautiful and rare. Only example known to us.
