Item Description
We had an example of this badge in Auction #201 but that had a red enamel border and this border is in yellow. The badge is 1" with center portraits of "Eb' - Flo'" plus surrounding text naming "Cheery Coons Club" and British publication "The People." Badge has a little tarnish but much less than our photo shows as we've cleaned a good bit off. There is a very tiny sliver of enamel missing above the letter "C" of "Club." Still the piece displays VF. Haughton following WWI, did editorial cartoons for Punch and London Mail and then in 1926 joined the London publisher Odhams Press. This item shows his first comic strip characters based on a minstrel concept. By 1930 he was creating artwork for the famous German-made Mickey and Minnie motorcycle toy along with a number of other German produced Mickey Mouse mechanical toys, among the rarest and most collectible Disneyana pieces. His next assignment was creating the first Mickey Mouse Annual released for Christmas, 1930 but dated for 1931. He continued to supply artwork for these annuals throughout the 1930's. Reverse of the piece has name of maker "A. Roden & Son/London." About the fourth we've seen.
