Item Description
This 7/8" button has backpaper by maker St. Louis Button Co. as well as their name on the bottom curl. Button reads "Detective Dan Club/Junior Member." Although this button represents an historic first comic book character club premium, the club was short lived as the first issue of Detective Dan sold poorly and the title was changed. The comic character was created by Norman Marsh and the revised title became Dan Dunn, Secret Operative 48. The comic strip served as a low-cost alternative to the more popular Dick Tracy but the strip survived to run daily and Sunday for ten years and appeared in as many as 135 newspapers as well as inspiring Big Little Books, several comic books, a dime novel pulp and a 1937 radio version. This button represents the earliest roots of the character and is one of only two examples known to us.
