Item Description
5.75" spoon with his name and figural portrait on the handle. Reverse is stamped “Sterling” and “Pat. Apl’d For” plus engraved name of “Lowell.” Butler, as a Civil War general particularly hated in the South, was nicknamed “Spoons Butler” based on his alleged habit of stealing silverware from southern homes he occupied. He also represented Massachusetts in the House, served as the state’s 33rd governor and was the Greenback Party nominee for president in 1884. The spoon dates from that era. NM and rare.
