Item numbers 1 through 1428 in auction 203
Item Description
This is a striking and rare piece almost certainly for 1896, rather than 1900, which carries the artist’s name. It is a 8x9.75" sheet of tin with its hollow reverse silvered and its highly embossed front in a brass luster to simulate gold, symbolic of the primary issue of 1896, the coinage ratio of gold vs. silver money. There is a .25" rim edge and top edge has two tiny holes holding a copper link chain for suspension. Embossed slogans are “Protection” and “Prosperity.” On the shoulder of the highly embossed profile is the name “Vogan” for Frank M. Vogan who created a 26" diameter bronze portrait plaque of McKinley, the apparent inspiration for this piece, and now in the Canton (Ohio) Museum of Art. Couple hairline scratches and tiny loss of luster of eyebrow, chin and coat lapel edge. Luster 90% intact. Extremely Fine. First we’ve seen. Rare.
