Item Description
In 1932, thousands of unemployed World War I veterans and their families congregated in camps around Washington, D. C. to lobby Congress for relief via a “Bonus Bill.” Eventually President Hoover on July 18 ordered Army Chief of Staff MacArthur to clear the camps. This 5x7" glossy photo shows razed camp on the Anacostia River Flats. It is from a series by “Capitol Photo Service” numbered “24" and captioned “Camp Marks D. C. After It Was Burned By Soldiers July 28, 1932.” Soldier with bayoneted rifle stands in foreground scene of destruction. On horizon is U.S. Capitol dome and masts of ship U.S.S. Constitution anchored in distant river. Very sharp clear details. Far right side has heavy vertical crease with .5" split at top and tip off lower corner. Minor tan marks on reverse which also has company’s purple ink stamp. Historic and rare. VG.
