Item Description
This and the previous item are two of five annual Christmas presents created for the President and Mrs. Nixon to give only to their inner circle of approximately 125 West Wing staffers. These were issued from 1969 through 1973. It is very likely they were assembled by the White House employed craftsman known as Frank the Framer. The heavy wooden frame is 17.5x26". At left on a linen backing is gold color print bordered in gold with gold foil small plaque below reading “James Monroe/By Samuel F. B. Morse/The White House Collection/From THE PRESIDENT AND MRS. NIXON/Christmas 1973.” At right with black lettering on buff parchment-like paper is historic information about the painting of Monroe painted in the White House in 1819. This text concludes with large gold text “With Our Best Wishes/The President And Mrs. Nixon/At Christmas/1973.” Above and below are diagonal beige ribbons. A large gold foil 3.5" Presidential seal appears above the ribbon at lower right. The ribbons have faint bit of age tone on extreme ends and the frame has about five small rub marks that do not detract much and could easily be repaired if desired. NM. A very limited presidential gift.
