Item Description
11.5x17.75" paper poster is lightly tanned on top half and blank reverse has pair of magic tape repairs to a pair of 1" long tears blending among the lettering at top right. There are faint vertical and horizontal hairline folds perhaps as originally distributed. The event was held Nov. 7th at Chicago’s “Coliseum 15th and Wabash Avenue.” It was under “Auspices: Communist Party” with additional words “and Communist League” printed over in black. Additional text reads: “Admission 25 Cents/Unemployed Free.” The artwork of U.S.S.R. symbols and workers marching with flag carries name “K.A. Duvanto.” Primary headline is “Celebrate the 14th Anniversary Of The Russian Revolution And The Success Of The 5 Year Plan.” Text above this reads “Workers! Stop The War-Makers! Defend Your Fatherland, The Soviet Union.” The event was to: “Hear Wm. W. Weinstone Of New York, And H. Newton Of Cleveland.” Weinstone headed a workers school in New York and Newton, an African American member of the party’s Central Committee, belonged to a party faction which advocated forming ideologically focused labor unions for unskilled workers as was the system in the Soviet Union. Their position was in opposition to the powerful American Federation of Labor’s rule that its members be restricted to skilled workers. The Trade Union Unity League was the party’s umbrella organization. There are five statements at left of artwork including “Organize Unions Of T.U.U.L.” and “ Strike Against Wage Cuts” and “Fight For Bread And Unemployed Insurance.” Fine and Rare. The only example we’ve seen. See Communist Party Anti-Racism poster #149.
