Item Description
Designed by James B. Longacre this example is truly spectacular. Not only does this example grade 64 out of 70, but it is also from the Central America that was lost at sea on September 12, 1857. The ship when it sank was carrying over $2,000,000 worth of gold. The ship was lost and its location was unknown. The search to locate this lost vessel began in the early 1980s and after much work and effort the ship was located. The large amount of gold discovered on the ship totaled over several thousand coins and when finally sold totaled around $100,000,000. The S.S. Central America find is considered by many to be a unique event as it was the largest Gold Rush era treasure to ever be lost. A strong luster highlights the pretty yellow golden hue. Miss Liberty and the details are very well struck.
