Item Description
3.5" diameter. 7/8" deep. 2 pc. circa 1830's. Nearly all lettering is missing at top edge but originally had text reading "William Bainbridge Esqr." Bottom reads "Small of The United States Navy." In 1812 he was given command of the Frigate Constitution, took her to sea on the 2nd of her War 1812 cruises, and destroyed HMS JAVA in battle on 29 Dec. 1812. In 1815 his squadron went on to the Mediterranean to suppress the renewed posed by the Barbary states. He was later commandant of the Boston Navy Yard, served as a Naval Commissioner in 1825-1828 and then was Commandant of the Philadelphia Navy Yard. He died in Philadelphia in 1832. Top and bottom pieces of the box are crazed as expected on lacquered boxes of this vintage. Lid has scattered edge roughness and surface paper loss. Over all good with clear, complete portrait.
