Item Description
13/16" showing kissing couple within heart shape and reading "Sweet Heart/Pepsin Gum." Reverse has W&H backpaper used only 1900-1901. The first kiss shown on a movie screen occurred in 1896 in one of the first films ever shown commercially to the public. The 47 seconds long scene depicted a re-enactment of the kiss between May Irwin and John Rice from the final scene of a stage musical titled "The Widow Jones." The film caused a scandalous uproar and resulted in disapproving newspaper editorials and cause for police action in the many places the movie was being shown. This advertising button, from four to five years later, actually reproduces the movie scene couple as an illustration of these two actors kissing. Both their heads and his hand are in the precise positions which can be seen in a still frame from the film posted on Wikipedia under the entry "The Kiss (1896 Film)." NM, displaying Mint. Morry Greener Collection.
