Item Description
1.25" with W&H backpaper used 1900-1912 although button is likely c. 1903. Lower text reads "D.M. Sechler Carriage Co. Moline, Ill." Daniel Sechler at age 70 established his carriage building company in Moline. The firm also made buggies, surreys, wagons, hearses, and starting in 1894 bicycles. The firm had over 200 employees by 1900. In 1903 they started to manufacture corn planters and later manure spreaders. The corn planters were known as Black Hawk Line and that is who is depicted on this button. The slogan above him "Just 3 In A Hill" refers to the corn planting technique of planting in "hills" a group of three kernels every eight to twelve inches in rows three feet apart. Left side of button has half dozen fine scuff lines showing only in reflected light. Button still displays Mint and is rare.
