Item Description
1.25" without backpaper and with no maker's name. Button has manufacturing and design qualities consistent with the 1901 Buffalo Exposition. Within the Cave of the Winds at Niagara Falls a radio transmitter was located and the roar of the falls was transmitted to the Bell Exhibition in the Electricity building at the Pan-America Exposition. The broadcast of this thundering sound was quite popular at the exhibition and likely inspired visitors to make the short trip to Niagara to see this phenomenon for themselves. The original cave was a natural cave behind Bridal Veil Falls which was originally discovered in 1834 and guided tours were given from 1841 until 1920 when a rock fall made the area too dangerous. The cave was obliterated by a 1954 rock fall and then subsequent dynamiting of a dangerous overhang. The tour now brings visitors to the front of Bridal Veil instead of behind it so that the tropical storm-like conditions can still be experienced with winds up to 68mph. The button has light all over stain and just a little variation in the blue background color. Still a wonderful button showing woman in long dress and with her almost even longer hair being blown severely to the right side of the button by an unseen force. Only example we've seen. Morry Greener Collection.
