Auction #203 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1428 in auction 203
Item Description
individual cards as well as store display cards holding multiple examples. The piece was produced by "Evans Novelty Co. Chicago." There are at least three versions in terms of the construction although front graphics are essentially the same on each. This was the first version. Curl also includes the words "Pat. Applied For." On this version the die-cut tin head and chest of Hitler is a piece of cut-out metal with a tiny tab on its painted gray reverse through which a thin wire is inserted. The other end of the wire is held by a pair of equally tiny tabs which are just barely visible on the front of the button to the left of the text panel. This piece has a replaced cord (not shown in photo) but typically the red string would be tied around Hitler's neck going up through a slot on the right side of the button and then into a hole in the area of the tree design then back down the reverse of the button and the cord comes out at the base of the tree on this example. Later examples were simplified and have a tab extending along the left edge where the string is tied and this moves the reverse piece up and down. When the cord is pulled Hitler's head rises from the slot as if Uncle Sam is hanging him from a tree limb. Text panel reads "Let's Pull Together." Outstanding NM and this version is particularly scarce.
