Item Description
Cohn & Rosenberger of New York was the first Disney jewelry licensee, beginning in 1931. A full page advertisement for their "Mickey Mouse Kiddie Jewelry" appeared in the first 1934 Mickey Mouse Merchandising Manual. Their advertising page is also shown on page 134 of Munsey's book Disneyana. In 1994, for a major article on "Disney Jewelry Collectibles" publisher Tom Tumbusch had the display shown in the 1934 ad re-created so he could feature it on the front cover of his Tomart's Disneyana magazine #5. This display is a very exact re-creation down to small details. The back wall of the piece is 14" wide by 14.75" tall. This area has an open slot at the top and holds a pair of foam core boards painted yellow. These are removable so jewelry can be suspended for display in the theater stage-like opening of the front panel. One of these boards is unused and the other has five inserted small brads from which jewelry was hung for the cover photo of issue #5. The front lower base of the display has 1.75" tall edges cut on a bevel and forming a 5x11" platform for the display of additional jewelry. There is even a 4" tall die-cut wood figure of Mickey with hand-colored applied thin cardboard front. A wooden block on the reverse allows the figure to stand. He can be positioned wherever on the display area and is quite similar to the Mickey shown in the 1934 advertisement. Other details include applied letters plus a shadow affect reading "Mickey Mouse Jewelry Show" across the front edge of the display base which includes ten hand drawn musical accent notes as well as a row of small rounded accents like footlights across the front edge of the platform. On the display's back panel above the "stage" opening is a simulated red curtain and above this is a 1.75" tall hand-colored oval portrait of Mickey accented around the sides by fancy scrolling and a yellow gold crown at the top. His portrait is flanked by 3-dimensional ribbon design again with applied letters and shadow affect reading "Mickey Mouse Jewelry." The underside of the base is signed by its creator "Bob Bernabe '91." The cost of the display in 1994 was $650. It comes with a color photocopy of the magazine cover it was created for. The item is from the Tomart Archives and comes with COA signed by Tom Tumbusch and Ted Hake. Some of the jewelry used on this display as part of the 1994 cover photo is also included in this auction. These lots are 1477-1486, 1496 and 1505. Each of those lots also come with COA signed by Tumbusch and Hake. NM and unique.
