Item Description
The button is 1.25" with metal back and bar pin which has some slight oxidation. The celluloid shows him in policeman's uniform standing before a traffic signal with rim text "Safety First-Stop-Drive Carefully!" Bottom curl has "©Hal Roach Studios." The button has all over scratch marks that show in reflected light but otherwise still displays cleanly. The rare part of this lot is a 3.5x5.5" cardboard with 1936 Hal Roach Studios copyright. One side has six lines of text where in the person who signed in ink pledges "I Promise Our Gang" with a list of five safety rules they will follow. This side of card has tan mark and some circular rust spots plus a pinhole where this original button was fastened. Reverse of the card has light aging and includes two paragraph letter titled "Hi Gang!" supposedly written by "Your Pal, Spanky McFarland" writing about safety and welcoming the person to the club. Concluding lines are "Okey Doke Boys and Girls" with his facsimile signature. Card also carries text of sponsor "Durham Dairy Products, Inc./Where Quality And Safety Rule." First time we've seen the card.
